Sustainable Building Architecture

(BMLRT-Stiftungsprofessur für Nachhaltiges Gestalten und Bauen – Neues Europäisches Bauhaus)

BOKU University seeks to appoint a Full Professor of Sustainable Building Architecture with 1st January 2026. The position is offered in accordance with §98 of the 2002 Universities Act in the form of an ongoing contract.

The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, the “Alma Mater Viridis”, is the University of Sustainability and Life Sciences. It is BOKU’s task to make a key contribution to the conservation and protection of resources for future generations through its wide variety of expertise.

Combining natural sciences, engineering plus social and economic sciences, its aim is to increase knowledge of the ecologically and economically sustainable use of natural resources. With 10,000 students and over 3,000 staff members, BOKU is one of Europe’s leading life science universities.

The Department of Landscape, Water and Infrastructure represents with its subject areas – amongst others – core competences of the (i) bachelor program “Environmental Engineering”, the (ii) master program “Cultural Engineering and Water Management”, (iii) the master program “Green Building Engineering”, as well as (iv) the doctoral program BUILD.NATURE (Build like nature – Resilient Buildings, Materials and Society). The strategic goals are energy and resource efficient design, construction and renovation for the development of a sustainable economic and living space.

The applicant is expected to be active in the field of architectural planning and design of buildings, both in teaching and research.

The applicant is expected to establish a link from an architectural perspective between spatial and landscape planning on the one hand and construction or resource-efficient building design respective construction on the other, and to research and teach in the area of this interface. In addition to the spatial conception and design of the buildings, generational function changes required by the users should be considered in the design.

Furthermore, the consideration of the basic principles of the New European Bauhaus (aesthetics, inclusion and sustainability) is essential and must play a central role in the research strategy.

Networking of research activities with national and international initiatives on the New European Bauhaus is also desirable.

The main focus should be on architectural design and circular-economy based planning in the primary use of bio-based materials. The applicant is expected to actively contribute to the lectures and tutorials of the Institute of Green Civil Engineering as well as to other courses at BOKU and to develop new courses on the topic.

A professional cooperation at the department and with other subject-related BOKU departments is desired.

Required qualifications

  • Venia docendi or international equivalent or a subject-relevant academic qualification, that is equivalent to a habilitation.
  • Relevant experience and competence in teaching, guidance in scientific work, as well as the supervision of junior scientists (PhD students).
  • Subject-specific research experience, national and international reputation, as well as ability to network.
  • Excellent publication achievements in the scientific field.
  • Teaching in German and English.
  • Experience in the successful acquisition, execution and management of research projects.
  • Cooperation with national and international research institutions and with relevant partners from public services and business.
  • Management and interpersonal skills including skills in gender and diversity management, inclusion and accessibility in communication; communication and team skills.
  • Participation in public relations.
  • Participation in relevant focus and cooperation programs of the University.
  • Participation in the self-governance of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken German and English or willingness to learn German in the first two years.
