Career level: Experienced professionals
Type of employment: Part time, Full-time
Duration of contract: bis 31.12.2027
Remuneration: Remuneration is in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Sector – Federal Government (TVöD-Bund)

At the DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies in Ulm, we develop precision instruments for space applications based on quantum technologies and bring them to prototype maturity together with industry. In addition, we are driving forward the transfer to aeronautics, digitalisation, energy, security and transport. We have an interdisciplinary approach: Theoretical basic research and experimental tests meet engineering implementation.
What you can expect
In the “Integration of Micro- and Nanosystems” department at the Institute for Quantum Technologies, we develop compact and scalable quantum systems and their components. With the help of microtechnology, we integrate functions and properties for cost-effective quantum systems on a chip basis. By this approach, we make a major contribution to transferring quantum systems from the laboratory to application and commercialization.
Rydberg atoms are simple but very versatile quantum systems. These atoms are excited and manipulated within vapor cells. Using state-of-the-art glass processing microtechnology, these cells can be miniaturized and additional functionalities such as wave guides and pressure control can be integrated.
Become part of our interdisciplinary team and join us in laying the foundation for this innovative approach to building quantum systems.
Your tasks
- You will develop compact vapor cells with a focus on integrated optical components guiding light for excitation, as well as design structures for in- and out-coupling of light.
- You design processes for filling the vapor cells with alkali metals and their encapsulation
- You plan and implement process steps and sequences for manufacturing the designed components
- You will be responsible for the planning, implementation and evaluation of characterization methods for miniaturized vapor cells and components.
- You will be responsible for part of the micro-production equipment and processes, including the associated tasks of process development, quality management and support
- You will document research results and technologies for their long-term development and exchange these with international scientists
What you bring with you
- Completed scientific university degree (Master’s/Diploma Uni) in natural sciences (e.g. physics, materials science) or engineering (e.g. applied physics, microsystems technology, nanotechnology, mechanical engineering) or other degree programs relevant to the position
- Specialist knowledge in the field of photonics or integrated photonics
- Specialist knowledge in microtechnology or connection technology or back-end processes (bonding, dicing, encapsulation, packaging)
- Initial experience in the development of test systems
- Experience in CAD, design and rapid prototyping
- Experience with data acquisition and data evaluation
- Enjoyment and experience of practical laboratory work
- Proactive, thorough and analytical way of working
- Very good knowledge of written and spoken English
Depending on qualifications and tasks assigned, compensation will be up to pay group 13 TVöD Bund.
We offer
