International Max Planck Research School for Chemistry and Physics of Quantum Materials (IMPRS-CPQM)
The International Max Planck Research School for Chemistry and Physics of Quantum Materials (IMPRS-CPQM) was established in January 2016 as a tri-institutional PhD program. In this innovative initiative, the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids in Dresden, Germany, collaborates with two prestigious universities: Technische Universität Dresden and the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Together, they offer an internationally leading PhD program focused on the forefront of materials chemistry and physics.
What sets IMPRS-CPQM apart from most other International Max Planck Research Schools is its formal partnership with a UK university, enhancing the program’s global reach and appeal.
In addition to its core partners, the International Max Planck Research School collaborates with various research partners, enriching the scientific expertise across its research fields and expanding the array of exciting research opportunities available to PhD candidates.
The IMPRS for Chemistry and Physics of Quantum Materials offers a comprehensive PhD program centered on solid-state chemistry and condensed matter physics. The collaborative efforts among the MPI CPfS, Technische Universität Dresden, and the University of St Andrews aim to create a highly attractive and resourceful research environment for doctoral students.
This interdisciplinary program not only bridges the boundaries between physics and chemistry but also promotes a collaborative approach among research groups from different disciplines. IMPRS-CPQM leverages the world-class research activities in quantum materials across the three institutions, supplemented by a diverse range of graduate courses and non-academic training. This comprehensive interdisciplinary training prepares students for impactful careers in academia and industry.

International Max Planck Research Schools
International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS) are structured PhD programs, in which individual Max Planck Institutes collaborate with universities. This effort to promote PhD level research and training started in the year 2000. Today, virtually every Max Planck Institute runs an IMPRS program. You can find more general information about the IMPRS, including a list of all IMPRS programs, on the webpages of the Max Planck Society.
Max Planck Society
The Max Planck Society (Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, MPG) is one of the leading German research organisations. More than 80 independent Max Planck Institutes pursue fundamental research in natural, life and social sciences, arts and humanities. Approximately 30 of the institutes conduct research in the area of chemistry, physics and technology. If you would like to know more about the Max Planck Society, please visit the MPG website.
IMPRS for Chemistry and Physics of Quantum Materials
In the International Max Planck Research School for Chemistry and Physics of Quantum Materials (IMPRS-CPQM), the MPI CPfS collaborates with Technische Universität (TU) Dresden and the University of St Andrews, Scotland to offer a PhD program on solid-state chemistry and condensed matter physics. By working together, we create a highly attractive overall package of PhD level research in an international environment.
Reflecting the diverse scope of research into quantum materials at MPI CPfS and its partner universities, IMPRS-CPQM is set up as an interdisciplinary PhD program. More specifically, we not only cross boundaries between physics and chemistry in a large number of research topics, but rather choose a dedicated collaborative approach between research groups, often from different disciplines. Our program builds on world-class research activities in quantum materials at the three institutions. Research projects are complemented by a variety of graduate courses and non-academic training to offer comprehensive interdisciplinary training.
