The Max Born Institute for Nonlinear Optics and Short Pulse Spectroscopy (MBI) is a nonprofit research institution, organized in the legal form of a registered association which jointly hosts seven research institutions in Berlin (Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V.). The MBI is scientifically independent but without legal personality. It is at the same time member of the Leibniz Association and is funded (50% each) by the German federal government (BMBF) and the German states (Länder), in particularly by Berlin.

 

The MBI maintains close scientific relations with the three Berlin universities. Its directors are jointly appointed by the institute and one of the universities. Marc Vrakking is full professor at FU Berlin, Stefan Eisebitt at TU Berlin and Nathalie Picqué at HU Berlin.

 

The institute was founded by the end of 1991 and consists presently of about 180 members of staff, among them 90 scientists (including guest scientists and PhD students). The annual budget is typically about € 26 Mio. of which about € 5 Mio. are acquired through third party funding.

The name of the institut refers to Max Born, one of the most important pioneers of modern physics. Max Born received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1954 (together with W. Bothe) “for his fundamental research in quantum mechanics, especially for his statistical interpretation of the wavefunction”. More about Max Born can be found here …

Mission MBI

MBI conducts basic research in the field of nonlinear optics and ultrafast dynamics in the interaction of matter with laser light and pursues applications that emerge from this research. It develops and utilizes ultrashort and ultrafast lasers and laser-based short-pulse light sources in a wide spectral range in conjunction with nonlinear spectroscopy methods. The combined use of lasers with x-ray pulses from free electron lasers and synchrotrons complements this scientific program. 

 

With its research, MBI fulfills a nationwide mission and is an integral part of the international science community. It offers its facilities and its scientific know-how also to external researchers within the framework of an active guest programme. MBI is involved in various cooperative research projects with universities, other research institutions and industrial partners.
