The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. By uniquely combining research, education and services, we aim to improve health and well-being through a better understanding of diseases and health systems – acting on this knowledge to make a real difference.

 

Our translational approach – from innovation and validation to application – enables us to provide novel diagnostics, drugs and vaccines directly to those who need them: people, communities, as well as policy- and decision-makers. Spanning more than 126 countries, our interdisciplinary work advances global health through innovation, partnerships and practical implementation.

Swiss TPH excels in scientific research in a wide range of fields, including parasitology, infection biology, epidemiology, public health, and health systems and economics. Our aim is to advance knowledge on disease and health systems while developing innovative tools and interventions.

 

We conduct research at all stages stage, from basic to translational and implementation science, bridging the gap between laboratory studies and real-world applications. Our focus spans infectious and non-communicable diseases, focusing on molecules, genes, cells, individuals, communities and populations. Using cutting-edge digital methods and interdisciplinary approaches, we integrate diverse methodologies across diseases and social-ecological systems.

Swiss TPH operates along a value chain from innovation to validation and application. New diagnostics, drugs, vaccines and tools are rigorously tested in real-world settings and integrated into health systems and policies.

Research Areas

 

Swiss TPH is committed to excellence in scientific research in diverse fields including parasitology, infection biology, epidemiology, public health, health systems and economics.

 

We study the biology and transmission of pathogens and use this research to develop new drugs and vaccines for neglected tropical and poverty-related infectious diseases.

 

We analyse the distribution and causes of infectious and non-communicable diseases in populations around the world and in different cultural and environmental contexts. Our methods range from anthropology and social science to biostatistics and mathematical modelling, and observational cohort studies using biobanks.

 

We have strong expertise in clinical research for drugs, diagnostics and vaccines – including pharmaceutical, clinical and implementation research – with a focus on poverty-related diseases.
