Satellite-based free-space optical communications uses low-divergence beams to reduce transmission power requirements at high data rates. To set up an optical link between the satellite and the ground station the satellite is pointed coarsely towards the ground station and initiates a search and acquisition process, usually done through a fine pointing assembly. Depending on the design of the optical system, the area covered during the search process is rather small, putting high requirements on the coarse pointing of the satellite. Therefore, in this thesis a mid-pointing assembly (MPA) shall be developed and tested, which increases the covered area during the searching process and relieves the requirements towards the precision of the initial pointing of the satellite. Furthermore, the MPA shall be qualified for application in space (radiation, thermal vacuum, vibration).
