Data Scientist or similar (f/m/x)

The focus of the DLR Institute for Data Science in Jena is to find solutions to the major challenges of the digitalisation age. Research here focuses on the areas of data extraction and mobilisation, data management and enrichment, and data analysis and intelligence.

In the working group "Information Extraction and Interoperability", we research and develop innovative and practical solutions for digitisation, especially for information exchange in heterogeneous environments. We cover topics and projects in all areas of DLR - space, aeronautics, transport, energy and security.

For us, one basis for interoperability is the use of semantic models. Since this is time-consuming to create, we are also working on methods for the (semi-)automatic enrichment of knowledge graphs, disambiguation, and topic modelling on ontologies. These topics will be covered by the position advertised here. You will work in an interdisciplinary team (computer science, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering) as well as in projects with colleagues across DLR and external partners.

Your tasks:

  • literature research and identification of current approaches in the fields of semantic modelling, including (semi-)automatic enrichment of knowledge graphs, disambiguation, and topic modelling
  • development of adequate formal, semantic modelling of data set descriptions of different domains and data queries
  • integration of data from different machine-understandable sources into knowledge graphs (e.g. by using JSON-LD, SPARQL statements, etc.)
  • design and implementation of appropriate prototypes to demonstrate and evaluate the techniques developed, including recourse to contemporary software engineering (e.g. versioning, test-driven development, etc.) and documentation for both developers and users
  • identifying and addressing new challenges in the thematic areas being worked on
  • publication of research results and presentation of results at national and international conferences as well as in the context of project consortia and science communication events
  • supervision of research assistants and final theses
  • completed, scientific university studies in computer science or related fields (e.g. data science). Alternatively, other relevant courses of study are also possible, provided that the focus is in the area of "semantic modelling"
  • initial experience in the independent and autonomous processing of complex research tasks
  • sound programming skills (e.g. Python, JavaScript, Java, or similar)
  • practical experience in semantic modelling (esp. OWL, RDF, SPARQL)
  • enjoy working in a scientific environment
  • very good written and spoken English
  • willingness to travel (nationally/internationally)
  • experience in method development in the field of semantics desirable, proven e.g. by publications at relevant conferences (ISWC, ESCW, etc.)
  • experience in GUI and UX design and implementation desirable

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x).Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
