Scientist* - Immuno-Oncology & Image Analysis

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine – ITEM is one of 76 institutes of the Fraunhofer Society, the largest applied research organization in Europe. The Fraunhofer ITEM has successfully been offering contract research for all aspects of human health for 40 years. Our mission is to protect human life in our industrialized world from health hazards and to contribute to the development of new therapeutic approaches.

At the division of “Personalized Tumor Therapy” of Fraunhofer ITEM in Regensburg, we investigate metastasis of solid tumors and develop new diagnostic tests and therapeutic approaches for systemic cancer. One of our current aims is to establish standardized immuno-oncology screening assays based on patient-derived material and to strengthen our imaging and data analysis capabilities.

We are looking for a scientist with a strong interest in drug and target discovery, image analysis, and bioinformatics to bridge the gap between automated lab experiments and data analysis.

What you will do

  • You will support the installation of an image analysis platform whose main applications are assay development in immuno-oncology,  toxicology assays, and high throughput screening.
  • Furthermore, you will contribute to research projects and perform research tasks independently.
  • In this position, you will significantly shape our application-driven technological solutions and expand high-content screening capabilities at Fraunhofer ITEM.

What you bring to the table

  • M.Sc. or PhD degree in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular medicine, bioinformatics, computer science or another field with strong connection to natural or engineering sciences.
  • Experience in biomedicine, cancer biology, metastasis formation and/or immunooncology would be an advantage.
  • Programming skills in scripting languages, like R and Python, and knowledge of image analysis software, like PerkinElmer’s Harmony, ImageJ/Fiji and CellProfiler, are highly desirable. Some background in machine learning and AI would be a plus.
  • Knowledge in handling and analysis of large data sets (e.g. HTS) would be an advantage.
  • Interest in high-content image analysis - from 2D to 5D - and developing data analysis pipelines for large-scale screening campaigns together with bioinformaticians would be very welcome.
  • Hands-on experience with cell cultures (2D) and organoid models (3D) as well as advanced microscopy would be an advantage.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
  • An independent personality with commitment, adaptability, team spirit, and a  positive attitude.
  • The ability to lead and manage research projects and perform research tasks independently.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English. A working knowledge of German would be an advantage.

What you can expect

  • We offer you an exciting and innovative research environment at the intersection of precision oncology, drug discovery, and data science.
  • You will have the opportunity to work in an infrastructure equipped with state-of-the-art high-throughput screening technologies and make a difference in the life of cancer patients by implementing a bed-to-bench-and-back personalized therapy approach.
  • You will gain insight into clinical problems and contribute to the development of diagnostics and therapies for cancer patients.
  • You will become part of a dynamic team in an innovative scientific environment (pharmaceutical companies, biotech, diagnostics, clinics, academic partners).
  • Our location in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Regensburg offers you many leisure activities and an attractive environment. However, remote work (within EU) may still be possible.

  • Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD).
  • The position is initially limited to 2 years – however, we are looking towards long-term employment.
  • The weekly working time is 39 hours.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
