Student Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or similar (f/m/x)

Free-space optical communication (FSOC) is a technology that offers some advantages over radiofrequency communications such as higher bandwidth, lower power consumption, and higher link privacy. However, FSOC has some limitations, e.g. a transmitted optical signal is highly distorted after propagating through the turbulent atmosphere, especially during an uplink propagation path. We are interested in measuring the distorted optical signal arriving at a receiver (in this case a satellite).  We are looking for hosting a student to modify and extend a design of the optical power sensor hosted on a satellite platform. This work includes the data sampling and storage, and interfacing with standard satellite platforms. The successful applicant will have to become familiar with existing hardware and consider electrical components used in previous space missions for the design.

The thesis shall comprise the following tasks:

  • familiarize with existing hardware
  • hardware re-design
  • documentation
  • if time allows: PCB design and/or microcontroller programming
  • background in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or similar
  • programming skills in Matlab/Octave/Python
  • knowledge of analog and digital electronics, signal processing, and embedded systems
  • interest in satellite FSOC
  • flexibility and an autonomous mode of working
  • fluent in German and / or English

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x).Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
