Two Postdoctoral Scientists (f/m/div) (W094)

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary center for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany. It is one of the premier climate science research institutes in the world. Located in the heart of one of Europe’s most livable and vibrant cities it provides a highly international and interdisciplinary environment for conducting scientific research as well as access to state-of-the-art scientific facilities.

The MPI-M is now opening two (3+1 year) positions for

Two Postdoctoral Scientists (f/m/div) (W094)

to support the development and scientific exploitation of a new generation of Storm-Resolving (km-scale) Earth System Models (SR-ESMs). The positions are funded with partial support from the H2020 projects NextGEMS – Next Generation Earth Modelling Systems (GA 101003470; 2021–2025), and CONSTRAIN (GA 820829), and will allow the successful applicant to work on the most scientifically and technically ambitious simulations systems imaginable.

The objective of the positions is to evaluate and improve the representation of the coupled climate system using kilometer scale coupled models. These positions emphasize the representation of precipitating convective systems and their interaction with the underlying ocean. The successful applicant will:

  • Analyze the representation of cloud and convective processes in this new class of climate models

  • Design and carry out stand-alone atmosphere and coupled ocean-atmosphere experiments testing physical representations of various processes

  • Implement novel modelling concepts into the numerical framework of ICON

  • Support the ICON model and infrastructure (e.g., output logging) development

  • Contribute to project and sub-task coordination

  • Disseminate the results through publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at conferences, or through social media, video-blogs, etc.

As a scientific member of the MPI-M the applicant will be afforded a wealth of opportunities to: be involved in student advising; contribute to and initiate independent projects, including planned field studies of tropical convection over the Atlantic; participate in soft skill and various personal development trainings.

To qualify for the open positions candidates must possess:

  • A PhD in the mathematical or physical sciences

  • Excellent programming skills

  • A track record of scientific accomplishment as documented by at least one first authored scientific publication

Additional qualifications that will be considered in evaluating potential candidates include:

  • Disciplinary expertise (climate, precipitating convection, air-sea interaction)

  • Modelling, or model development experience

  • Organization and communication skills

  • Personal motivation and interest in the position

Employment conditions

  • The positions are available from September 2021 for 36 months, an extension to 48 months is possible

  • Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E14), including extensive social security plans; the conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service

Selection criteria

A election panel will be established to evaluate the qualifications, the experience and the ability of the candidates to fulfill the responsibilities as outlined above. In light of the institute and the funded projects commitment to support the career development of young scientists, preference in the selection will be given to candidates within a few years of their PhD.

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology is committed to increasing the number of female scientists and encourages their application. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.
