1 PhD position (TV-L E13 65%) to study the contribution of aerobic fungi to biogas production The successful candidate will work as part of a research team within a collaborative and interdisciplinary project between the Professorship for Fungal Biotechnology in Wood Science located at the TUM School of Life Sci-ences Weihenstephan in Freising, the Micro- and Molecular Biology Group at the Bayerische Landesanstalt für Landwirtschaft (LfL) in Freising and the company INNOVAS BMK GmbH in Munich. The groups aim to bring to-gether the expertise on aerobic (TUM) and anaerobic (LfL) fungi with the expertise on biogas plant construction and maintenance (INNOVAS). The contribution of fungi to the overall biogas production process is largely un-described so far, but good evidence exists that it is much more substantial than expected. Within the project, the consortium aims to quantify the fungal contribution in detail for the first time and optimize the methane production from hard to digest lignocellulosic substrates in two-step biogas plants by a targeted and continuous application of both aerobic and anaerobic fungi. This development will be necessary to allow many established plants to adapt to a more efficient and sustainable process using agricultural residues as it will be necessary in the future
