In the Department of Product Lifecycle Management at the Institute of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul, we dedicate ourselves to the research and development of innovative methods for assessing and optimizing product efficiency and sustainability in the aviation industry. One of our main research focuses is on the life-cycle-based economic and ecological evaluation of aircraft maintenance processes and novel aircraft concepts. We are looking for a research associate to support our department in further developing these lifecycle simulations. Your task will be to design and implement a suitable ontology to collect, propagate, and prepare information from various software tools for the depiction of the lifecycle for further studies. This includes a systematic requirement analysis regarding the various internal and external interfaces and their technical conversion into a suitable data exchange format using Python. In addition to leveraging synergies and connecting internal tools to DLR-wide and/or external software environments, this ontology aims to establish a standard for lifecycle simulations using discrete events. Moreover, data gathered from different projects and studies will be collected and made available for subsequent statistical model development. This will enable quick analyses for estimating costs or environmental impacts over the lifecycle. You will work in an interdisciplinary team and contribute to sustainable solutions for the aviation industry with your work. Your role is essential for the development and application of advanced technologies and methods that will have a significant impact on our research and the industry.

As part of our team, you will be responsible for the following tasks, among others:

  • systematic collection and analysis of specific requirements for efficient data management, considering temporal dynamics and managing stakeholder complexity
  • evaluation and selection of suitable data exchange formats and ontologies for complex simulation applications, with the goal of optimizing their performance
  • customized design and development of ontologies for precise representation of aircraft and component life cycles, including seamless integration into existing simulation tools
  • optimization of the connection of these simulation tools to internal and external software environments to improve data communication and system interaction
  • introduction of guidelines for data structuring and standardization, as well as the application of database management techniques to promote data quality, rapid data querying, and effective data analysis
  • preparation of simulation data for use in statistical models and machine learning algorithms, considering data integrity and security
  • creation of detailed documentation to ensure transparency and knowledge transfer within the team and to stakeholders
  • scientific publication and presentation of results at project meetings, international conferences, and in peer-reviewed journals

Your qualifications:

  • you have a university degree (diploma/master’s degree) in engineering (e.g. aerospace, mechanical engineering), data science, computer science, or other fields relevant to the job
  • you have profound knowledge in the development and implementation of ontologies, preferably with experience in lifecycle simulations, as well as in organizing and standardizing data for analytical models
  • you have excellent analytical skills and experience with relevant software tools, e.g., Python and/or MATLAB
  • you are highly motivated and willing to work in an interdisciplinary manner and have the personal aptitude to work in an international team
  • you have an independent and solution-oriented work ethic
  • very good proficiency in German and English, both written and spoken

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
