The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) seeks to appoint a Full Professor of Landscape Planning with 1st February 2025. The position is offered in accordance with §98 of the 2002 Universities Act in the form of an ongoing contract.


The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, the “Alma Mater Viridis”, is the University of Sustainability and Life Sciences. It is BOKU's task to make a key contribution to the conservation and protection of resources for future generations through its wide variety of expertise. Combining natural sciences, engineering plus social and economic sciences, its aim is to increase knowledge of the ecologically and economically sustainable use of natural resources. With 10,000 students and over 2,900 staff members, BOKU is one of Europe’s leading life science universities.


In research terms, the main focus of the current Department of Landscape, Spatial and Infrastructure Sciences is on the analysis, planning and development of sustainable landscapes and spaces from the point of view of engineering, planning and design. Its strategic goals centre on integrating basic research with applied research and on the management of natural resources: this gives rise to cooperative projects both within and outside the Department and the University. The Department has core responsibility for the bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in Landscape Planning and Landscape Architecture and teaches knowledge and skills in other bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes at BOKU.


The Institute of Landscape Planning, where the professorship will be located, focuses particularly on the role of societal transformations towards sustainability and corresponding landscape- and institutional shifts. The range of research questions addresses various spatial and temporal dynamics using qualitative and quantitative, such as surveys, administrative data and big data to research socio-spatial inequalities, policy evaluation and consultancy. Regarding teaching activities, the Institute of Landscape Planning is involved in several degree programmes, including the Bachelor's and Master's degree programme “Landscape Planning and Landscape Architecture”, the graduate degree programme “Climate Change and Societal Transformation”, as well as the Doctoral School “Transitions towards Sustainability”.


The ideal applicant has an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research profile. A broad academic background in landscape planning and landscape governance is expected. The successful candidate represents the scientific discipline of Landscape Planning in research, teaching, and Third Mission. The relevant research fields include at least:

  • Planning and governance in various landscape-related contexts within urban and rural contexts.
  • Planning and policy instruments of landscape planning at local and supralocal levels in national and international contexts, as well as vertical interactions and horizontal integration of policy agendas.
  • Land use conflicts: development of theoretical and methodological approaches to navigate and address conflicting interests and land-use claims.
  • Inter- and transdisciplinary methods and conceptual approaches for landscape planning.
  • Innovative methods for science-society interactions to integrate different knowledge systems.
  • Societally relevant research activities in relation to Third Mission.


In research-led education, involvement in compulsory and elective teaching activities in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Landscape Planning and Landscape Architecture as well as in other related degree programmes at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna is a requirement, including the supervision of corresponding theses. The commitment to teach in Bachelor's degree programmes is a compulsory requirement. On-campus presence is expected.


An important part of this professorship is a committed, collegial collaboration in academic self-governance and management.


Job specifications:

  • Venia docendi or international equivalent or an subject-relevant academic qualification, that is equivalent to a habilitation.
  • Relevant experience and competence in teaching, guidance in scientific work, as well as the supervision of junior scientists (PhD students). 
  • Subject-specific research experience, national and international reputation, as well as ability to network. 
  • Excellent publication achievements in the scientific field.
  • Sound international research experience.
  • Sound experience in inter- and transdisciplinary research, as well as proven experience in the application of qualitative and/or quantitative methods.
  • Teaching in German and English.
  • Experience in the successful acquisition, execution and management of competitive research projects at national and European level.
  • Cooperation with national and international research institutions and with relevant partners from public services and business.
  • Management and interpersonal skills including skills in gender and diversity management, inclusion and accessibility in communication; communication and team skills.
  • Participation in public relations.
  • Participation in relevant focus and cooperation programs of the University.
  • Participation in the self-governance of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken German and English or willingness to learn German in the first two years.
