Context of the professorship in the Department of Mechanical Engineering

Fluid mechanical simulations play a fundamental role in mechanical engineering in the design and planning of mechanical systems and thermodynamic processes. For example, when designing vehicles and aircrafts, aerodynamics is crucial for low air resistance, highly dynamic fluid-structure interactions must be considered when planning wind turbines, and low-emission energy conversion processes such as hydrogen or iron combustion require an understanding of complex chemo-mechanical combustion processes. These problems are accompanied by ever increasing demands on the accuracy, speed, and physical modeling complexity of fluid mechanics simulations (i.e., Computational Fluid Dynamics, CFD). It is therefore necessary to develop innovative numerical methods that can meet these requirements and to implement them on high-performance computers and parallel computing architectures (i.e., High Performance Computing, HPC) for practical application in mechanical engineering.

The focus of the professorship's research will therefore be the development and implementation of innovative numerical methods in order to simulate highly complex fluid mechanics problems in mechanical engineering more efficiently and accurately than currently possible. Modern numerical methods in fluid mechanics shall be used in the research areas of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (energy, mobility, production, resources, and life science). The professorship is intended to strengthen the profile topics of TU Darmstadt, in particular “Computational Engineering” and “Thermo-Fluids and Interfacial Phenomena”, as well as research in the field of Mechanics.

Tasks

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt seeks candidates at the earliest possible date for a Full University Professorship (W3) for Numerical Methods in Fluid Mechanics. We are looking for a scientist with an international reputation and visibility who will represent the field of numerical methods in fluid mechanics in research and teaching.

The research focus of the professorship should cover the development of numerically efficient, highly accurate or structure-preserving spatial and temporal discretization methods for stationary or transient fluid mechanical problems, as well as their use for practical engineering applications.

In this context, the professorship should also address at least one of the following topic areas:

  • Consideration of coupled or multiphysical phenomena, such as aerodynamics and aeroacoustics, high-speed flows, shock waves, thermofluidics, fluid-structure interactions, reactive flows, multiphase flows, processes involving phase transformations, or soft and biomaterials.
  • Implementation of numerical methods in efficient codes and on highly parallelized computer architectures such as HPC or GPU clusters, or in the future also quantum computers.
  • Linking CFD with physics- or data-based model reduction methods (e.g. in conjunction with machine learning), shape or topology optimization, quantification of uncertainties, or integration into digital twins and process chains.

The willingness to cooperate nationally and internationally and to work interdisciplinary both within the department and with other departments and research institutions is expected.

The professorship will also represent the field of numerical methods in fluid mechanics in teaching and will also participate in comprehensive courses of the department. The willingness and ability to teach courses in German or English language is required.

Your profile

Candidates are expected to have completed an engineering, mathematical, or science degree with a subsequent qualified doctorate, internationally visible research achievements, habilitation or habilitation-equivalent (postdoctoral) accomplishments, experience in obtaining third-party funding, didactic and pedagogical suitability, leadership skills, and the willingness to participate in academic self-administration. Experience in the development of numerical methods and their use to solve fluid mechanical problems with a strong connection to engineering science should be proven through high-ranking publications.

As part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan region, Technical University of Darmstadt and its surroundings are characterized by living internationality. The core element of this is a cosmopolitan climate with functional multilingualism at our university. Therefore, very good English and, at the latest after three years, good German language skills are expected.

Regulations for employment for W3 professorships are specified under §§ 67 and 68 HessHG (Hessian Higher Education Act). Such a professorship is tenured with a remuneration package commensurate with experience and qualifications, following the German "W-Besoldung" and subject to negotiations between the applicant and the university directorate. A comparable employment relationship is possible.
