The Germanisches Nationalmuseum (GNM) is the largest cultural history museum in Germany. Our 1.4 million objects, which represent all German-speaking regions of Europe, have inspired visitors and scholars since 1852. Today, we are one of only eight research museums in Germany that are members of the prestigious Leibniz Association. Our Conservation Center offers a wide range of state-of-the-art facilities for conservation and technical art history, while the museum also includes archives dedicated to German art and artists as well as an extensive research library. Most importantly, the museum campus is a vibrant cultural hub in the heart of Nuremberg, with its buildings dating from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. We employ over 200 members of staff in a wide variety of professions.

Our scholars explore art and culture in central Europe from prehistory to the present day, and they constantly seek to relate their findings to current topics and issues. It is our mission to bring history to life and frame it in new, meaningful contexts.

“Museums and Collections in the 21st Century”

Full time, pay grade 14 of the public sector (EG 14 TV-L), 4-year fixed-term contract

Key responsibilities:

• Being responsible for establishing the Junior Research Group (consisting, apart from the group leader position, of two doctoral researchers, EG 13/0.65 FTE as well as student assistants) and carrying out your own independent research projects within the subject outlined above
• Publishing your findings in relevant, (inter-)national, peer-reviewed journals and present them at (inter-)national conferences
• Communicating your research-based knowledge and contributing to strengthening (inter-) national networks and cooperation, e.g. by organizing academic conferences, inviting museums experts and visiting scholars to research stays and guest lectures
• Developing new project ideas and preparing grant applications

Requirements:

• Doctoral degree with excellent results in a relevant field (e.g. art history, cultural studies) or in another area of the humanities, arts or culture management
• At least two years’ experience as a postdoctoral researcher, or professional experience in research-based museum practice (e.g. as assistant curator or comparable project roles), ideally including object-based research and academic discourse
• A proven record of collection management experience
• Experience in project management and coordination
• Commitment to interdisciplinary dialogue and academic exchange of ideas with the museum’s curatorial staff
• International experience in research and/or museum practice as well as strong intercultural competence
• Willingness to (co-)supervise doctoral projects
• Good working knowledge of written and spoken German, excellent English-language proficiency 
• A high level of communication and organizational skills, which allow you to thrive in a team-oriented environment
