Associate Professor in Hydrogeology

The Department of Geoscience, Aarhus University, Denmark invites applications for a position at the Associate Professor level in Hydrogeology. We seek an innovative and visionary geoscientist trained in the field of groundwater hydrology.


The ideal candidate will contribute to research and teaching within the field of porous-media hydrogeology. The appointee will have expertise in numerical modelling of groundwater dynamics. Knowledge of interactions between groundwater and surface water and contaminant transport in porous media, but also fieldwork experience in e.g. hydrological monitoring and groundwater pollution is advantageous.

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. degree in a relevant natural science discipline, have a strong international research standing and a broad multidisciplinary research network. Their scientific profile will be reflected in publications in international peer-reviewed journals. Proven ability to attract external research funding and documented teaching skills are required.

The appointee will expand research collaborations at the highest international level following their own scientific interests and priorities and establish a vibrant research group utilizing external funding from national and international sources. They will develop new curricula and teach classroom as well as field courses and supervise students at all academic levels. They will have interest in collaborating with industrial partners and cooperating with other research units at Aarhus University. The appointee will have an opportunity to develop fruitful collaboration with other research groups at this Department, such as the Hydrogeophysics Group, Quaternary Geology, and Sedimentology.

Department of Geoscience

The Department of Geoscience currently employs around 70 staff including faculty, externally funded researchers, post-docs, Ph.D. students, and administrative and technical personnel. We have a strong research profile spanning a broad range of geological and geophysical disciplines contained in research clusters Climate and Environment; Water; Energy and Natural Resources; and Deep Earth Systems. One prominent research field is hydrogeophysics. We have an outstanding research and teaching infrastructure including geophysical, geochemical, sedimentological and micropalaeontological laboratories, HF-laboratory, a class 100 metal-free clean-laboratory, and TCN dating facilities. We also have the largest pool of hydrogeophysical electromagnetic research instruments in the world. The Department participates in numerous multidisciplinary research centers such as WATEC bridging core-disciplines within the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Technical Sciences.

To be nominated for the promotion program, the Associate Professor must be assessed within a few years of focused career advancement as able to obtain qualifications corresponding to a professorship appointment in an open call.

The expected appointment is November 1, 2024 or at the nearest possible date.


Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the Assessment Committee Chairman and the Assessment Committee if necessary – the Head of Department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert Assessment Committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the Committee and will receive their assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed, a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range

Natural Sciences refer to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
