As part of the HorizonUAM research project, DLR is researching, developing and testing novel concepts for urban air mobility based on remotely piloted aircraft with electric propulsion, so-called air taxis. The project is part of the long-standing research in the fields of unmanned aircraft and autonomous flight. One focus of the project is on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) based automation systems. The challenge lies particularly in proving and safeguarding the correctness and reliable operation of the AI-supported system in order to meet the high safety standards established in aviation.

You will investigate and develop approaches for the verification and system integration of AI-based compo-nents for use in air taxis. The certification within the framework of current and planned aviation standards is one of the guides along your work. You will focus on technical topics in the field of machine learning: data management, verification of the learning result, robustness, traceability and predictability. Furthermore, you will investigate approaches for the integration of potentially non-verified functions in safety-critical contexts.
As part of tasks, you will develop technology demonstrators for selected AI-based on-board systems. You will integrate these into simulation environments and prototypical unmanned aircraft for real-world experimenta-tion. You will support the project team in conducting simulation campaigns and flight tests and evaluate the results with regard to your scientific questions. By publishing your scientific findings, you will contribute to the future use of safe AI systems in aviation.
Against this background, you ideally have a high level of technical competence in the field of AI in safety-critical systems and software verification. You are interested in both scientific work and practical activities in the context of system integration of technology demonstrators. You enjoy working in large and interdisciplinary teams and have the social skills to constructively master the resulting challenges.
