Postdoctoral position: “Molecular Biology of RNA Phages” (f/m/d)

10201

The Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research (HIRI) is offering a

Postdoctoral position: “Molecular Biology of RNA Phages” (f/m/d)

in the research group Molecular Principles of RNA Phages under the direction of Jun.-Prof. Jens Hör.

Research in the Hör lab is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of RNA phages during infection, host takeover, and anti-phage defense. Cystoviridae are a family of phages with a tripartite dsRNA genome and a lipid envelope. They seem evolutionarily connected to Reoviridae, eukaryotic viruses that include pathogenic human rotaviruses. Despite intense research on the structure and functions of cystoviruses, the post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms and the involvement of host proteins in the phage replication cycle are poorly understood. The postdoctoral fellow will study these molecular mechanisms in detail.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the content of research tasks in projects of other scientists
  • Investigation of the RNA-based regulatory mechanisms of Cystoviridae
  • Implementation of various high-throughput sequencing methods
  • Participation in various co-operation projects with internal and external partners
  • Guidance of Master/Bachelor students

Requirements:

  • Successfully completed university or master's degree in biology, biochemistry, microbiology, biotechnology, or a related field and PhD in microbiology or related field
  • Prior experience in phage biology, molecular biology, microbiology, and/or biochemistry
  • Experience in the elucidation of mechanistic processes in the cell
  • Highly motivated and independent and able to work as part of an international team
  • Strong written and spoken English language communication skills
  • Strong publication record given career stage

We offer you:

  • An attractive and varied job in a future-oriented research institute
  • A state-of-the-art infrastructure and the latest technologies
  • Flexible working hours, part-time models
  • A corporate culture of appreciation and promotion of equal opportunities
  • Extensive training and continuing education opportunities to develop professional knowledge and personal skills
  • A family office to support family and career as well as childcare offers
  • Interesting additional public service benefits
  • Subsidization of the job ticket

About the HIRI

The Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research (HIRI) is the first institution of its kind worldwide to combine ribonucleic acid (RNA) research with infection biology. Based on novel findings from our strong basic research program, our long-term goal is to develop innovative therapeutic approaches to better diagnose and treat human infections. HIRI is a site of the Braunschweig Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in cooperation with the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) and is located on the Würzburg Medical Campus.
