About the Institute

The Max Planck Institute of Biophysics (MPIBP) is a leading international research institute that uses biophysical, biochemical, and computational methods to investigate the structure, dynamics, and function of cellular systems at the molecular scale. It consists of several research groups and scientific core facilities, with about 200 employees from more than 25 countries. The Institute is located at the Campus Riedberg in Frankfurt am Main.

The lab “Mechanisms of Cellular Quality Control” led by Florian Wilfling at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics is seeking two highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to work on two projects funded by an ERC Starting Grant. The aim of the projects is to investigate the mechanisms of cargo recruitment during autophagosome biogenesis (Lee et al., Nature Cell Biology 2020 and Wilfling et al., Molecular Cell 2020) using quantitative mass spectrometry and correlative cryo-electron microscopy techniques. The candidates will join a dynamic, enthusiastic, and international team of biophysicists and biochemists ready to tackle exciting problems related to proteostasis in a collaborative fashion.

We are seeking for individuals with

  • A PhD degree and an outstanding experimental track record in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics, cellbiology, or a related field of science
  • Hands-on experience in cryo-EM, cryo-ET, and/or fluorescence microscopy or hands-on experience on cross-linking mass spectrometry
  • Hands-on experience with molecular biology, biochemistry, and budding yeast genetics techniques such as molecular cloning, protein expression, and/or purification
  • Extensive knowledge and strong interest in the field of protein homeostasis (desired)
  • A creative and hardworking mindset and a strong interest in basic and interdisciplinary research.
  • Proficiency in English (both speaking and writing)
