Science Engineer – Computing and support of the CTAO onsite data centre

A new on‑site data centre is being set up for the CTAO (Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory) astroparticle observatory at two locations in La Palma and Chile.

The data centre at DESY, Zeuthen with 15,000 TB storage, 10,000 cores, 120 GPUs and more than 1,000 servers will take on this task with your support and will also operate these data centres remotely with local support after the construction phase.

About your role:

• Planning, implementation and maintenance of the distributed systems, computer networks and security of the CTAO on‑site data centres to be operated
• Support with the planning and installation of the network topology
• Installation, configuration, support and monitoring of all network components
• Setting up and documenting a DMZ as well as checking, improving and managing a network security concept

About you:

• Completed scientific university degree in computer science or computer engineering or mathematics or physics or equivalent specialised knowledge, skills and experience
• Expertise in the configuration of management tools for networks
• Very good specialist knowledge of security-relevant network components and IT security structures
• Very good specialist knowledge of network structures, common layer 2 network protocols (such as VPC, Spanning Tree, VTP, LLDP) and layer 3 network protocols (such as HSRP, various routing protocols)
• Good programming skills, preferably Python and Bash
• Knowledge of network monitoring systems, preferably LibreNMS
• Good knowledge of Linux operating systems, preferably Red Hat compatible systems
• Very good knowledge of English and good knowledge of German
