Bionics – Sustainable Building Principles inspired by Nature

The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) seeks to appoint a Full Professor of “Bionics – Sustainable Building Principles inspired by Nature” at the earliest possible date. The position is offered in accordance with §98 of the 2002 Universities Act in the form of an ongoing contract.
The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, the “Alma Mater Viridis”, is the University of Sustainability and Life Sciences. It is BOKU's task to make a key contribution to the conservation and protection of resources for future generations through its wide variety of expertise. Combining natural sciences, engineering plus social and economic sciences, its aim is to increase knowledge of the ecologically and economically sustainable use of natural resources. With 10,000 students and over 2,900 staff members, BOKU is one of Europe’s leading life science universities.
The present Department of Civil Engineering and Natural Hazards, which will be part of the new Department of Landscape, Water and Infrastructure from 1st January 2025, consists currently of the Institutes of Mountain Risk Engineering, Applied Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Institute of Soil Bioengineering and Landscape Construction, Structural Engineering as well as Green Civil Engineering and deals with the development of a sustainable economic and living environment in its subject areas. The most important studies that are of particular relevance for the advertised professorship are (i) the Bachelor's programme Umweltingenieurwissenschaften, (ii) the Master's programme Civil Engineering and Water Management, (iii) the Master's programme Green Building Engineering and (iv) the doctoral programme BUILD.NATURE (Build like Nature: Resilient Buildings, Materials and Society).
The applicant should be active in the field of Bionics – Sustainable Building Principles inspired by Nature, both in teaching and in research. The applicant is expected to establish a link between biology on the one hand and construction or resource-efficient building construction on the other hand and to research and teach in the area of this interface. The focus should be on the use of bio-based materials, in particular wood, as well as on overall energy efficiency.
The principles of the New European Bauhaus (aesthetics, inclusion and sustainability) must play a central role in the research strategy. The networking of research activities with national and international initiatives on the New European Bauhaus is also desirable.
The applicant is expected to actively participate in the lectures and exercises of the Institute of Green Civil Engineering as well as in other courses at BOKU and to develop new courses on the subject.
Professional co-operation within the department as well as with other, related BOKU departments is desired.
