Engineer or Physicist or similar (f/m/x)

Scientific activities/projects

Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!

For our National Test Centre for Unmanned Aircraft Systems in Cochsted we are looking for

Engineer or Physicist or similar (f/m/x)

Advanced Air Mobility noise

What to expect:

The Institute of Propulsion Technology focusses on the development of efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft engines and power plant turbines. In the Department of Engine Acoustics, a team of around 25 scientists deals with transient phenomena in flows, with a particular focus on acoustics. Over the past 25 years, our department has developed methods for localising and analysing sound sources on aircraft in overflight using microphone arrays.

Building on this, measurement campaigns are to be carried out at the DLR site in Cochstedt with various aircraft ranging from air taxis to commercial aircraft. DLR's Cochstedt site has a comprehensive infrastructure for acoustic measurements on aircraft, which is to be further expanded. As part of the DLR project IAM-IOS, a new team of scientists is to be set up there from January 2025, who will be supervised by various DLR institutes and work on all aspects of sound measurement with individual microphones, microphone arrays and modelling for simulations of sound events in various situations in a multidisciplinary manner.

Your mission:

The objective of the research is to gain insight into the noise produced by the electric fans of a vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicle during the transient flight phases between take-off and cruise. In order to achieve this, unsteady flow simulations of a representative fan stage will be conducted. The simulations will also consider the effect of inflow distortion as it occurs for an engine mounted over the wing. The results will be analysed and compared with validation data. Moreover, a lower-order noise prediction model will be developed. The results will be documented and presented, and the findings will be utilised in scientific publications.

What we expect from you:

  • Scientific university degree (Master's/University Diploma) in the field of engineering sciences, e.g. aerospace, physical engineering, transport engineering or physics or other fields of study relevant to the position
  • Sound knowledge of acoustics and turbomachinery
  • solid experience with the application of CFD simulations
  • very good programming skills in Python
  • good programming skills in C++
  • good command of written and spoken English
  • willingness to travel regularly between Cochstedt and Berlin, as supervision and instruction will be provided by the Engine Acoustics Department in Berlin-Charlottenburg
  • willingness to carry out a background check in accordance with §7 of the Aviation Security Act

What we offer:

DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
