Path and Trajectory Planning for Planetary Rovers

What to expect:

Fully autonomous navigation for mobile systems is of great importance for applications in scenarios where communication to the operator is limited. In recent years, the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics  has demonstrated the application of planetary rovers for autonomous exploration.

Open-source projects for mobile robot navigation have significantly matured in performance and reliability, particularly (but not exclusively) the Nav2 stack. The aim of this position is to evaluate these open-source solutions in the context of planetary rover navigation. Based on this evaluation, the role will involve extending and researching methods to further enhance the capabilities of these systems, with a focus on adapting them to the specific challenges of planetary exploration. Integration and testing will be carried out in both our full-robot simulation and on the physical rover.

We are seeking a motivated and talented student to join our research team as a working student, thesis candidate, or intern to contribute to path and trajectory planning for the LRU rover. The position duration is flexible, starting from a minimum of three months for an internship. For other roles, such as a Bachelor's or Master's thesis, or a working student position, the duration is negotiable based on the candidate's preferences and availability.

The successful candidate will have

  • the chance to work on a cutting-edge mobile robot for planetary exploration
  • an opportunity to learn from experienced roboticists in a professional environment
  • the potential to grow and apply your skills and knowledge

What we expect from you:

  • currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree in robotics, computer science, or a related field
  • knowledge of ROS, Python and/or C++, git
  • professional working proficiency in English and/or German
  • experience in planning for robotics, and/or control for mobile systems is a plus

What we offer:

DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
