CONTEXT & JOB DESCRIPTION
Within the Detector & Electronics Group in the Instrumentation Services and Development Division, the Electronics Unit provides development and support capabilities in the field of electronics required for instrumentation control for the ESRF experimental stations and accelerator, fast digital electronics and data acquisition systems for detectors and sensors, and high-precision analog solutions.
As a member of the Electronics Unit, you will work on the design, implementation and optimization of instrumentation and electronics solutions for advanced control, synchronisation, data acquisition and signal processing in collaboration with other engineers or the ESRF. You are expected to take the role of project manager in complex development projects, often multidisciplinary, reporting to and in close collaboration with the Head of the Electronics Unit.
Your main missions will be to:
- Provide ESRF experimental stations and accelerator complex with optimised support in development, improvement and maintenance of electronic instrumentation.
- Establish a sound structure for efficient development and integration of innovative electronics instrumentation.
- Advise the Head of the Unit in your specific area of competence.
You will be in charge of the following tasks:
- Manage instrumentation projects involving the selection, installation and/or development of specific control hardware and electronics.
- Develop electronics for advanced instrumentation, synchronisation and data acquisition conceived to meet the needs of the ESRF experimental stations (beamlines) and the accelerator complex.
- Act as the technical reference person for the development of complex systems, both digital and analog electronics, within the team of developers.
- Promote and maintain a high level of expertise in digital electronics, FPGA development and associated tools.
- Be a contact person for electronics support for the accelerator and the beamlines.
- Investigate and promote new system architectures and platforms, keeping track of the latest technological developments of interest for the ESRF in electronics instrumentation
EXPECTED PROFILE
- A higher university degree (Master or equivalent diploma offering 300 ECTS) in electronics or closely related area. A PhD would be an asset.
- At least ten years of practical experience in the development of digital and analog electronic systems
- Sound experience in design and prototyping of electronic boards and systems and the required development tools
- Experience in management of complex technical projects
- Good knowledge of high-speed data processing and data transmission with programmable digital electronics (FPGA)
- Good background in the use of computing tools, including some basic programming skills for testing and operation of electronic instrumentation
- A genuine interest in working within a multidisciplinary and international environment, with strong interpersonal skills and team spirit
- Ability to abstract complex problems and apply critical thinking
- Autonomy, organisation and methodical in approach
- Good writing, presentation and technical documentation skills
- Project and time management skills are an asset
- Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)
WORKING CONDITIONS
The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
