PhD position in the MSCA Doctoral Network H2POWRD (f/m/x) - Harnessing Hydrogen’s Potential with Rotating Detonation

Experimental investigation of RDCs for gas generator applications in rocket propulsion

What to expect:

The DLR Institute of Space Propulsion tests liquid chemical space propulsion and propulsion systems on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA), industry and cooperating research institutions. DLR employees research and develop application-oriented and advanced propulsion technologies, components and propellants. The activities cover the entire range of technology readiness levels (TRL). In addition, the experience in dealing with hydrogen is transferred to the fields of aviation, energy and safety, and the knowledge of scramjet technologies and the corresponding testing options is brought into the field of safety.

DC3 is part of the H2POWRD – Harnessing Hydrogen’s Potential with Rotating Detonation: Call for applications to 15 PhD positions in the MSCA Doctoral Network H2POWRD.

The goal of this project is to investigate if the conventional gas generator in a liquid propellant rocket propulsion system that drives the turbopumps in many European launcher engines could be replaced by a rotating detonation combustor (RDC). The main technical challenges and research questions that need to be addressed are whether a stable detonation can be achieved and sustained at very low propellant mixture ratios and how the flow and pressure dynamics of the rotating detonation waves influence the driving of supersonic turbines.
