Agricultural Systems Engineering
The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) seeks to appoint a Full Professor of Agricultural Systems Engineering with 1st October 2025. The position is offered in accordance with §98 of the 2002 Universities Act in the form of an ongoing contract.
The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, the “Alma Mater Viridis”, is the University of Sustainability and Life Sciences. It is BOKU's task to make a key contribution to the conservation and protection of resources for future generations through its wide variety of expertise. Combining natural sciences, engineering plus social and economic sciences, its aim is to increase knowledge of the ecologically and economically sustainable use of natural resources. With 10,000 students and over 2,900 staff members, BOKU is one of Europe’s leading life science universities.
The professorship is assigned to the Institute of Agricultural Engineering, which is now part of the new Department of Agricultural Sciences. In research and teaching, this department covers a broad spectrum along the entire supply and value chain. The focus is on agricultural systems with the interactions of microorganisms, plants, animals and humans as well as on the development of sustainable production processes to safeguard and develop the quality of life.
The Institute of Agricultural Engineering focuses on site-adapted, innovative and sustainable process engineering in optimised agricultural production. The aim is to utilise local resources such as soil, water, plants and energy efficiently and sparingly. Core competencies are information and sensor technology, agro-mechatronics, labour sciences, agricultural energy systems, energy efficiency and sustainability assessment in agriculture.
The responsibilities of the professorship include research in the field of agricultural systems engineering with at least two of the following focal points:
In addition to the main topics of the Institute of Agricultural Engineering, interdisciplinary research topics in cooperation with colleagues at BOKU and agricultural engineering institutions are expressly encouraged. Participation in the further development of the newly established BOKU Research Farm is expected.
Teaching in agricultural systems engineering includes lectures, tutorials and excursions in German and English, as well as the supervision of Bachelor's and Master's theses and dissertations. Teaching also requires participation in interdisciplinary events and practical exercises and integration and collaboration in doctoral programmes at BOKU. In addition to this teaching activity, participation in the further development of curricula is expected.
