PROFESSOR OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN MEDICAL ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
The Faculty of Medicine's Department of Biomedicine announces a full-time, permanent position for a Professor or Associate Professor in the field of Medical Artificial Intelligence (AI). We seek an accomplished individual who is actively advancing their career and possesses significant academic expertise in AI and medical or health-related research.
The successful candidate will collaborate with departmental staff and the broader faculty to contribute to outstanding research and teaching. The Faculty of Medicine has recently established a Centre for Medical AI, in partnership with several institutions in the Bergen area. The appointed individual will also serve as the leader of this centre.
Research at the Department of Biomedicine focuses on fundamental questions in human medicine and biomedicine, with key areas including cancer research, neuroscience, drug discovery, metabolism, proteomics, and structural biology. Teaching responsibilities primarily involve medical and dental programs, as well as the master's program in biomedicine.
Work tasks/research field:
The person who fills this position shall both initiate and lead research projects, teach and supervise students and research fellows, as well as take on administrative tasks within a recommendatory time frame. It is expected that the person who fills this position will regularly submit applications to relevant national and international sources for research financing.
The teaching responsibilities that are assigned to this position are primarily connected to the Department of Biomedicine, but the person who fills this position is obligated to teach in areas relating to the study programmes for which the faculty/department is responsible at any given time. The person who fills this position is expected to demonstrate a high level of ambition and good quality with regards to research and teaching, and to participate actively in the strategic planning and academic activities of the department and the faculty.
As the Director of the Centre for Medical Artificial Intelligence, the appointed individual will be responsible, among other things, for developing and implementing the center’s strategic initiatives, coordinating activities among various partners and relevant collaborators, establishing and enhancing networks with relevant national and international research communities, and promoting the center’s work through publications, conferences, and community engagement.
The position is primarily based on the institute's or faculty's premises.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
Qualified applicants have a Norwegian doctoral degree in a relevant academic field, or equivalent qualifications and satisfy the requirements concerning educational competence. The ideal candidate publishes at a high international level, has been successful in applying for grants from national and international sources of financing for research and educational development, and possesses substantial experience in leading and mentoring other researchers. Results attained in the course of the last 5-7 years will be given particular weight in evaluation of the application.
The ideal candidate also has experience with teaching at the bachelor- and master level or in a programme of professional study, as well as experience with supervision of research fellows. Experience from different national and international research institutions, and the ability to establish international networks will count positively in the evaluation, as will experience with and interest in innovation. The applicant’s personal suitability for the position is a significant factor in the evaluation.
Possession of educational competence is a mandatory requirement for this position. Candidates are advised to consult the guidelines for developing a pedagogical portfolio at the Center for Medical Education. If the candidate is unable to demonstrate the required competence at the time of hiring, they will be expected to acquire it within two years. Training will be provided if the requirement is not met prior to employment.
The primary language of instruction is Norwegian. The successful candidate must achieve proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at level B2 within three years of employment. The University of Bergen (UiB) offers Norwegian language courses and will support the candidate in meeting this language requirement.
