Postdoc position (f_m_x) – Tsunami Modeling Project MULTI-MAREX

17606

GFZ is Germany's national centre for solid Earth research. We advance the understanding of dynamic processes to address global challenges, from mitigating the impacts of natural hazards and sustaining our habitat amid global change to responsibly managing georesources. We are part of the Helmholtz Association, the largest German scientific organisation. With around 1,200 employees as well as ca. 500 guest researchers, we contribute to the Helmholtz Research Field Earth and Environment, aligning cutting-edge research with societal relevance and international collaboration. Our work integrates multidisciplinary studies across Earth's system components, leveraging advanced technologies and infrastructure to research solutions and to transfer our knowledge to society. We are doing this according to our vision: “Taking the pulse of our Earth to safeguard a habitable planet”.

For section 2.5 Geodynamic Modeling (department “Geophysics”), we are looking for a:

Postdoc position (f_m_x) – Tsunami Modeling Project MULTI-MAREX

Reference Number 10244

As part of the research mission 'Marine Extreme Events and Natural Hazards' of the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM), the joint project MULTI-MAREX  will establish a living lab for the investigation of marine geological extreme events and associated hazards in Greece. Extreme geomarine events, including earthquakes and volcanogenic or seismogenic tsunamis and their cascading events, have serious short- and long-term consequences for coastal communities. Early warning and disaster prevention pose both societal and political challenges for which the joint project is developing the necessary expertise to deal with these hazards at various levels.

Section 2.5 is responsible for the Task 4.1 “Underexplored tsunami scenarios for the Central Mediterranean”. Numerical modeling of the earthquake and landslide triggered tsunamis in selected hot-spots regions including the islands Santorini and Crete shall provide the basis for high-resolution inundation and impact modeling to support co-design of mitigation measures at the selected locations.

To support our contribution to the MULTI-MAREX Living Lab project, we invite highly motivated candidates experienced in tsunami modeling to apply. The position will be funded for 18 months.

Your responsibilities:

  • De-aggregation of the NEAMTHM18 PTHA model at the selected hot-spots
  • Re-assessment and refinement of the hot-spots relevant tsunamigenic sources – earthquakes and landslides – with incorporation of geological and geophysical data
  • Building and running set of probabilistic scenarios tailored to the hot-spots
  • Conveying simulation results to cooperating teams working on inundations and VR-scenarios
  • Publishing results

Your qualifications:

  • MSc/PhD in Earth Sciences, with focus on geophysics
  • Knowledge of tsunamigenic sources – earthquakes, landslides – and tsunamis: their physics, ways of detection and observation, numerical aspects
  • Experience in numerical modeling of tsunamis; experience with HySea is an advantage
  • Good skills in Python
  • Good written and oral English skills

What we offer:

  • Ambitious and varied tasks in a dynamic and international research environment
  • State-of-the-art equipment
  • Public service benefits
  • Extensive training opportunities
  • Professional career advice offered by our in-house Career-Centre
  • Flexible working hours and conditions
  • Support with finding a good work-life balance offered by benefit@work
  • Institute day-care centre on site
  • Working at the Albert Einstein science park on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam
  • Work place within walking distance of Potsdam main train station, or just a short ride on the shuttle bus

Start date: As soon as possible

Fixed-term: 18 months from start date

Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.

Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is generally suitable for part-time work.

Place of work: Potsdam
