In the space and IT sector, the IT team of the Microgravity User Support Center (MUSC at Cologne), a subsidiary of the German Space Operations Center, is looking for an IT and space enthusiast to help us with fascinating, space-related, and diverse IT challenges for the operation of science experiments on the International Space Station (ISS) and during interplanetary missions. Our team's ambition is the backup of near-Earth and interplanetary missions and the support of experimenters involved in these projects and their experiments on various launch systems. In addition to this, information and communication technologies of MUSC, including the ground infrastructure, have to be maintained, serviced and continuously developed and supervised.

The focus of the work is on the operation and testing of the IT ground infrastructure and the scientific ground facilities of the International Space Station. To prepare and use these facilities on the ISS, the following operational tasks are to be performed as part of an ESA externally funded project:

  • ensuring the availability of data systems, i.e. regular verification via monitoring of networks, firewall systems and virtual environments and performing corrective actions

  • monitoring of data streams with the help of monitoring, network and firewall systems, including detection of internal irregularities and external anomalies
  • all tasks / processes have to be documented by using wiki and data and document management systems
  • support of the operating engineers at the consoles in case of system anomalies
  • continuous adaptation and implementation of new security systems and services to increase the protection of the components in various ground system networks (hardening)
  • participation and support in various tests and mission simulations accompanied by own assistance / contributions
  • supervision and keeping all ground facilities ready during tests and mission operations
  • error analysis, error tracking, and error correction according to pre-defined processes
  • concept creation, construction, integration / configuration and verification of networks and firewall systems for new ground segments
  • renewal and replacement of S/W and H/W (obsolescence management) including physical installation and cabling of new servers and network devices
  • support of ESA processes and participate in IT security events
  • maximal two times four days shifts per month, no weekends to work
  • hybrid work with 2 or 3 days in office
  • Master's / Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
