Engineer Energy engineering, Environmental engineering, Aerospace engineering or similar (f/m/x)

The Institute of Networked Energy Systems in Oldenburg and Stuttgart, Germany, develops with its approx. 180 employees, technologies and concepts for future energy supply based on renewable energy sources. The Institute’s three departments – Urban and Residential Technologies, Energy Systems Technology and Energy Systems Analysis – work on system-related issues for intelligent and efficient linking of the electricity, heating and transport sectors. Systems of all sizes and levels are being investigated, ranging from individual installations and “smart” buildings to networked residential districts and cities. The Institute also evaluates energy systems at national and international levels, using its own network-structure-models and technology assessment methods.
The department of Energy Systems Analysis conducts research in the fields of energy meteorology, network and system modelling as well as energy scenarios and technology assessment. In the group of Energy Scenarios & Technology Assessment we conduct multidimensional assessments of energy systems and technologies by investigating ecological, economic, technical and social aspects and combining the results to an overall view that supports decision making.
In interdisciplinary projects, we investigate together with other DLR institutes as well as companies in the aviation sector the potential of electric, hybrid-electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft for a climate-neutral as well as commercially successful operation. In this sense, the entire life cycle of the aircraft (from manufacturing to disposal/recycling) as well as the associated energy supply and infrastructure are assessed from an environmental, economic and social point of view and taking into account future technological developments.
Your tasks are mainly:
- You will conduct prospective environmental and economic assessments of innovative aircraft concepts and the associated energy supply.
- Your results will contribute to a multidimensional assessment with environmental, economic, social and technical criteria.
- You will publish your results in reports as well as in scientific journals and at conferences.
- The supervision of bachelor, master and doctoral theses according to your qualification is possible and desired.
- You shall support the department and group lead in the acquisition of third-party funding.
- You will be responsible for the structuring of project contents and the development of problem-oriented solutions.
- In addition to the content-related work, you will have project management responsibilities.
- You completed your university degree (university diploma/master's degree) in engineering with a focus on energy, environmental or sustainability science, aerospace or comparable field of study.
- You have knowledge in life cycle assessment (e.g. LCA, LCC) and experience in the assessment of (energy) technologies.
- You have experience in using software for life cycle assessment modeling (e.g. SimaPro, Brightway2) and corresponding databases (e.g. ecoinvent).
- You enjoy working in interdisciplinary teams and have experience in project management.
- You have a very good command of English (spoken and written).
- You have distinctive analytical skills, a sense of initiative and the ability to communicate and work as part of a team.
- You ideally have experience in publishing scientific results.
- Ideally, you have good programming skills (e.g. Python, Matlab or comparable programming languages).
- A doctoral degree in the field of environmental engineering or similar is desirable.
- Knowledge in the field of aeronautical engineering is beneficial.
- Good German language skills are beneficial.
