PhD position (Junior Scientist) – Millimeter Wave MIMO Radar systems (f/m/d)

Festanstellung, Vollzeit · LINZ

SALs industry partners developed the world’s most compact and efficient MIMO radar for demanding industrial imaging applications. Though in markets there are still no competitive solutions – we’re looking beyond the horizon for solutions that are more versatile and modular that could have wide range of applications including every day’s life applications.

In this PhD, you will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Working on millimeter wave massive MIMO Radar systems for industrial and commercial applications.
  • Working on development of a new generation Radar with integrated antennas that will open new doors in wide range of applications from automotive to demanding industrial applications.
  • You will collaborate with two leading industry players and be supported by the scientific team at SAL and receive academic supervision from JKU Linz.
  • Explore literature and review current state of the art solutions, their pros and cons and compare them against our new ideas and proposals.
  • Perform necessary system level simulations to evaluate performances of the proposed solutions and select the best architectures.
  • Working on development of a hardware and software concepts for MIMO radar, considering various aspects like: array configuration and topology, power distribution, signal processing of collected data, choosing the most effective radar cell options for the usage as a building block of bigger or massive MIMO radar systems.
  • Design, simulate & build prototype hardware to deploy & test ideas. Benchmark your prototype against other solutions.
  • Work with other PhD students & scientific staff in the same project.
  • Technical and academic support of master student and interns.
  • Scientific publication and dissemination of your findings at relevant conferences & journals.
  • Note: This role could be more oriented toward signal processing or toward antenna and front-end aspects, so we encourage all applicants with skills in either or both of these areas to apply.
  • Master’s degree in Electrical / Electronic Engineering / Telecommunications or Physics (or similar / equivalent).
  • Good knowledge of Telecommunications, Radars, Antennas, Antenna arrays, MIMO concepts.
  • Good knowledge of MATLAB (and/or PYTHON).
  • Experience with circuit simulations and 3d simulation tools (e.g. Ansys HFSS, CST, or similar).
  • Experience with electronics laboratory equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes, supplies, soldering etc.).
  • Experience with FPGA and/or DSP programming is a plus.
  • Applied experience in MIMO Radars, Antenna arrays is a strong plus.
  • Eager to learn new things and deep dive into niche technical topics.
  • Work as part of a larger scientific team, good communications skills.
  • Work in multicultural environment and exchange ideas.
  • Highly motivated for research on cutting-edge technologies for millimeter wave MIMO radars and enthusiastic for novel technologies for sustainable world.

Silicon Austria Labs (SAL) is a top research center for Electronic Based Systems (EBS). At three locations (Graz, Villach, Linz), SAL is conducting research along the entire EBS value chain in the areas of sensor systems, power electronics, RF (radiofrequency) systems, system integration and embedded systems to develop future-oriented solutions for industrial production, health, energy, mobility, safety and more. SAL brings together key players from industry, science and research and thus valuable expertise and know-how and conducts cooperative, application-oriented research along the value chain. Cooperative projects are co-financed by SAL and enable a fast and unbureaucratic project start. SAL is thus shaping the high-tech location Austria and Europe and developing the future
Innovation is our top priority and so are our employees. We are a family-friendly company and support the compatibility of work and family as much as possible. That is why we have been awarded the Work and Family Certificate until 2023. But we are constantly working on new measures to offer our employees an environment where they feel good, healthy and motivated.
