Aerospace Engineer, Computer Scientist, Mathematician or similar (f/m/x)

The Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology is a leading research institute in the field of aerodynamics/aeroacoustics of airplanes and aerothermodynamics of space vehicles. The main activity of the C²A²S²E department (Center for Computer Applications in AeroSpace Science and Engineering) is the development of numerical methods and processes for the multi-disciplinary simulation and optimization of aircraft - from flight physics design to virtual certification.

We develop physical models for complex flows and cutting-edge solution algorithms, efficient optimization strategies covering all relevant disciplines, as well as surrogate models based on high-fidelity methods. The customization of numerical methods for optimal efficiency on high-performance computer clusters is of particular importance to the department. The flow-solvers being developed by C²A²S²E are routinely used for a wide range of applications in academia, research and industry throughout Germany and Europe.

Your main task is to develop, apply and evaluate efficient methods for the design of laminar airfoil and wings taking uncertainties into account. This includes the development of a surrogate-based methodology for wing design employing simulation tools with different levels of fidelity, e.g. a combination of classical panel methods and high-fidelity CFD codes. Laminarity should be achieved both by shape optimization and by active suction and should be taken into account in the design process. To increase robustness, uncertainties in operating conditions and in numerical model parameters will be accounted for explicitly. The developed capabilities will become part of DLR's toolbox for surrogate modeling, SMARTy, and will be presented or published at conferences as well as in peer-reviewed journals.

The position is part of the SE²A - Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Aviation Cluster of Excellence (further information www.tu-braunschweig.de/en/se2a) and takes place in close cooperation with other partners in the cluster of excellence. The possibility to do a PhD is given.
