About Uppsala University

Uppsala University was founded in 1477. Today it is a strong, comprehensive research university ranked among the best in the world, with 50,000 students and close to 5,000 researchers.

Vision, goals and strategies

Uppsala University is the oldest Nordic university, founded in 1477. Today we are a comprehensive research university with a clear mission: to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society, thus contributing to a better world.

Uppsala University: Mission, Goals and Strategies

Uppsala University's mission is to gain and disseminate knowledge for the benefit of humankind and for a better world.

  • The University is based on the fundamental idea and premise that investments in education and research contribute to a better future.
  • The University aims to offer an inspiring and well-functioning physical, social and cultural environment.
  • Uppsala University contributes to development and innovation locally and nationally and is an active party in the pursuit of sustainable social development.
  • Collaboration with the wider community is a natural, integral part of such research and contributes – directly or indirectly – to solutions concerning the sustainability challenges facing society.

Research at Uppsala University

Uppsala University conducts research into a wide variety of areas, ranging from how life emerged on Earth to how to solve the climate crisis.

Research challenges:

Energy

Vindkraftverk, kraftledningsstolpe och solceller.

The transition to sustainable energy systems, in Sweden and globally, is one of the major challenges of our time. Most of the global emissions from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas are associated with energy supplies and transport. Consequently, climate change is largely an energy issue. Managing the rapid transition to the fossil-free welfare country that Sweden and many other countries aim to be requires a massive technology shift. A far-reaching reorganisation of the energy system and the transport sector will affect large parts of our society.

Energy research has long been a prioritised area at Uppsala University. The University has strong clusters in areas ranging from energy transition technologies, storage, fuels and energy transmission, research on energy efficiency and negative emissions, to research on societal reorganisation and climate change leadership. The University’s campuses in Uppsala and Visby are located in regions with ambitious goals for responding to climate change, which means there is great potential for collaboration with local actors.

Biodiversity

The importance of conserving and protecting biodiversity is emphasised in the 17 Global Goals in the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Regnskog.Biodiversity encompasses all the variation that exists on Earth among and within species, habitats, natural features and ecosystems.

All life on Earth depends on biological diversity. Biodiversity can help species and ecosystems resist and recover in the event of changes in the local environment, bacterial and viral attacks, and pollution. Biodiversity and natural ecosystems help us to pollinate our crops, recycle nutrients and purify air and water. Biodiversity provides insurance for future needs, but is also recognised to have an inherent value of its own.

Research on biodiversity is hugely important for achieving the goal of sustainable development for future generations. There are many important questions. How are we to develop and conserve biodiversity nationally and globally? What role does biodiversity play in the ecosystem and what role do we humans have in the threat to biodiversity? Which species exist and how do new species arise? How can populations adapt to local changes? And what impact does climate change have on the existence and distribution of species?

AI – artificiell intelligence   Stiliserad hjärna i blågrönt och lila.

Today, artificial intelligence is being used in an increasing number of societal sectors, which will have a profound impact on our daily lives. Specialised computer systems are being introduced in medicine, education, finance, and transportation. How can we take advantage of the rapid development of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and how do we prevent the risks?

Answering these questions requires knowledge of both technology and society. AI research at Uppsala University covers technology, law, philosophy and linguistics, as well as the workplace, politics, and health.
