Technical University of Darmstadt is an autonomous university with broad excellence in research, an interdisciplinary profile, and an explicit focus on engineering sciences.

The Department of Materials and Earth Sciences of Technical University of Darmstadt invites applications for a

Assistant Professorship (W2 with Tenure Track) or Full Professorship (W3) for Functional Ceramics (open rank)

We are looking for

  • an internationally outstanding researcher in an early career phase with promising potential or
  • an experienced researcher with excellent scientific credentials and international visibility

in at least one in the following research areas:

  • Ceramic materials for energy conversion
  • Electroceramics
  • Biocompatible ceramics
  • Ceramics for extreme conditions
  • New and energy-efficient synthesis methods for ceramics

We are looking for a personality engaging in an engineering approach to functional ceramics, which is active in the synthesis of these materials. The engineering aspects should also extend to the teaching profile: active participation in the courses Mechanical properties of materials and Structural Materials is expected.

Participation in the Collaborative Research Center 1548 FLAIR is possible.

The professorship should engage in interdisciplinary research collaboration with other groups in the department, within other departments and with research and industrial partners.

As part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan region, Technical University of Darmstadt and its surroundings are characterized by living internationality. The core element of this is a cosmopolitan climate with functional multilingualism at our university. Therefore, very good English and, at the latest after three years, good German language skills are expected.

The assistant professorship is designated as a qualification professorship according to §70 HessHG. Accordingly, the duration of the academic activity during and after the doctorate should generally not exceed nine years or the scientific activity after the doctorate four years. This maximum duration maybe extended if necessary in the case of birth or adoption of children under the legal requirements of § 70 HessHG. Furthermore, applicants should have completed their doctorate at a university other than TU Darmstadt or have worked scientifically outside TU Darmstadt for at least two years after completing their doctorate. The assistant professorship is initially limited to six years and comes with the option of a tenured professorship after a successfully completed tenure process. Remuneration follows the German W-Besoldung at level W2 Hessisches Besoldungsgesetz. A comparable employment relationship is possible.

The tenure process, which can be initiated one and a half years before the end of the assistant professorship, evaluates the corresponding achievements in research and teaching. Upon successful completion of the tenure review, the position immediate becomes a tenured W3 professorship. For further information, please see the tenure guidelines of Technical University of Darmstadt.

Regulations for employment for W3 professorships are specified under §§ 67 and 68 HessHG. Such a professorship is tenured with a remuneration package commensurate with experience and qualifications, following the German "W-Besoldung" or a comparable employment relationship and subject to negotiations between the applicant and the university directorate.

Technical University of Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female employees and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications, applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference. Technical University of Darmstadt is certified as a family-friendly university and offers a dual career service.

Further enquiries concerning the position may be addressed to the Dean of the Department of Materials and Earth Sciences, Prof. Karsten Durst, email: dekan@matgeo.tu-darmstadt.de

Applications should be in English and include a cover letter with research and teaching statements, a curriculum vitae including the academic career path, a research and teaching concept, a list of publications, copies of relevant diplomas and certificates and an overview of previous teaching experiences (including evaluation results). The cover letter should contain a statement about the intended professorship level (W3 or W2 with tenure track).
