Description

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University is accepting applications for a Staff Associate III to oversee general operation and maintenance of the organic geochemistry facility, including ordering supplies, billing lab users, and handling EH&S compliance with oversight from laboratory Principal Investigator (P.I.). Operate and conduct maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment/instrumentation including an Accelerated Solvent Extractor, gas chromatographs, mass selective detector and other lab equipment and facilities. Assist in managing schedules of laboratory users such as students, research assistants, and visiting scientists and acts as a resource for new team members by providing guidance in laboratory methods and instrument use. Oversee and conduct sample analyses for lab users' research projects, including method development, sample management, chemical analysis, oversight of research assistants' work, and data reporting. Participate in data analysis of laboratory results.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
  • Conduct sample preparation and analyses for research projects.
  • Provide oversight and scheduling for laboratory users such as students, research assistants, and visiting scientists.
  • General oversight of lab operations such as conduct inventories and order solvents, gases, consumables, management of hazardous waste and other activities.
  • Keep records of lab users and support billing for the cost center.
  • Receives direction and minimal supervision on complex assignments that require a high degree of initiative and independent judgement. The P.I. will provide initial training and guidance on research techniques, software, and instruments.
  • This position involves day-to-day oversight of laboratory activities but the Staff Associate III will not supervise other employees.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in geology, chemistry, or a closely related discipline and 4-6 years of previous experience working in a laboratory setting required. A Master's degree could substitute for some work experience.
  • Experience working in an organic chemistry/geochemistry lab is preferred.
  • Must be detail-oriented and have strong organizational skills.
  • Must be independent and self-reliant and have excellent written and verbal communication skills; English skills required.
  • Must have experience in operation and maintenance of specialized and costly devices.
  • Submit monthly billing for cost center but is not responsible for laboratory accounts or budgeting.

The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will remain open until the position is filled.

 

Appointments are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal each July 1st, contingent upon performance and funding.

The salary range for this position is: $70,000-$77,000
