About the job

The Faculty of Humanities at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology invites applications for two PhD-positions in artistic research. The employment will be for a period of three years without required duties, however the positions may be extended with required duties such as teaching, depending on the Department’s needs.

For a position as a PhD fellow, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The successful applicants must complete their PhD studies within the period of employment. Applicants must affiliate themselves with relevant groups in artistic research at the Department of Art and Media Studies or Department of Music and be qualified for admittance to the PhD-programme in Artistic Research.

The applicant must account for how the project can be related to established fields at the Faculty and the Department’s academic activity. Academic and strategic affiliation will be a central part of the assessment. Applicants are encouraged to get in touch with relevant academic staff early in the application process. The intended main supervisor must be employed at either the Department of Art and Media Studies or the Department of Music and be part of the relevant research group. The application must include confirmation from the intended main supervisor that they are willing to supervise the project. Supervisors must satisfy the requirements for supervising at the PhD-level. Applications that do not include confirmation from the main supervisor will not be assessed.

Strategic assessments will be a key element in the selection process.

Whoever is appointed will have the head of department as their immediate supervisor

Required selection criteria

  • Master’s degree with a weighted average grade of B or higher in terms of NTNU’s grading scale for the last two years of their master’s, in accordance with Section 6.1 in NTNU’s PhD-regulations. Equivalent competence in the creative or performing arts may also be considered. It will be the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that satisfactory documentation is included in the application.
  • Strong academic and artistic background
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the PhD programme in Artistic Research
  • Good written and oral English or Scandinavian language skills


The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd fellow, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant 

In accordance with the Regulations concerning terms and conditions of employment, former PhD research fellows at NTNU are not eligible for the positions regardless of field of study. Candidates who already have an approved doctorate in related fields from other institutions, both nationally and internationally, are also asked not to apply for these positions.

Salary and conditions

As a doctoral research fellow (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 (Ltr. 54) per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The employment will be for a period of three years without required duties, however the positions may be extended with required duties such as teaching, depending on the Department’s needs.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD-programme in Artistic Research at the Faculty within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

About the application

The application must contain information about the applicant’s background, language abilities and motivation to complete the PhD-project. The application and project description must be in a Scandinavian language or in English.

Publications and other scientific work must follow the application. Please note that your application will be considered based solely on information submitted by the application deadline. You must therefore ensure that your application clearly demonstrates how your skills and experience fulfil the criteria specified above.

The application must include: 

  • CV and certificates
  • Transcripts and diplomas for bachelor's and master's degrees (with diploma supplements)
  • Description of the doctoral project to be carried out during the employment period, using the appropriate template
  • Confirmation from main supervisor
  • Up to five relevant examples of their artistic work
  • Name and contact information of three referees

 

Through the project description the applicant must document a high potential for artistic research. The project description is the key element in evaluating the applicants. It is also highly important that the project is feasible within the nominal length of study, which is three years full time, with ½ year set aside for the coursework component.

The successful applicant commits to completing a PhD within the period of employment and the available resources. The applicant must therefore demonstrate that they will have access to the necessary equipment and infrastructure to complete the project. PhD research fellows at the Faculty of Humanities will receive up to NOK 150 000, - in working capital (driftsmidler) to complete the project.

If all, or parts, of your education has been taken abroad, we also ask you to attach documentation of the scope and quality of your entire education, both bachelor's and master's education, in addition to other higher education. We will take joint work into account. If it is difficult to identify your efforts in the joint work, you must enclose a short description of your participation.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on the project description, education, experience, personal suitability and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates.
