Position for MSc student (f/m/d) in Biochemistry

30/2023

The research group of Prof. Volker Haucke (Department of Molecular Pharmacology & Cell Biology) offers

a position for an MSc student (f/m/d) to conduct thesis work on the biochemical characterization of novel small molecules targeting class II PI 3-kinase function.

starting 1 January 2024 (or later). The group uses an interdisciplinary approach that combines genome engineering with biochemical, proteomic, and cell biological approaches in various models ranging from in vitro studies to cellular and animal models to study endo-lysosomal membrane dynamics and cell signaling and their roles in disease. The MSc thesis project builds on the recent structural characterization of class II PI 3- kinase and the development of the first-in-class small molecule inhibitors for class II PIKC2a (Lo et al Haucke, V. (2023) Nat Chem Biol 19, 18-27. doi: 10.1038/s41589- 022- 01118). The primary goal of the project is to characterize novel small molecules targeting class II PI 3-kinase activity in vitro and in cell-based models with the ultimate goal to cure human diseases related to class II PI 3-kinase dysfunction. Selected other recent publications from the group: Ebner et al Haucke, V. (2023) Cell, online ahead of print. doi: 10.1016/j.cell.2023.09.027; Rizalar et al Haucke, V. (2023) Science 382 (6667), 223-230. DOI: 10.1126/science.adg1075; Jang et al Haucke, V. (2022) Science 378, eabq5209. DOI: 10.1126/science.abq5209.
