Physicist, Engineer Vacuum technology (f/m/x)

5055

The aim of the DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies in Ulm is to develop precision instruments for space applications based on quantum technologies and, in close cooperation with industry, mature them into prototypes. It thus provides a bridge between fundamental research and industry. Together with the DLR-Institute for Satellite Geodesy and Inertial Sensing in Hannover and the Galileo Competence Center in Oberpfaffenhofen, the institute in Ulm plays a pioneering role in these fields of research and application. The research of the four core departments Quantum Metrology, Quantum Information and Communication, Quantum Nanophysics, and Quantum Control of Charged Matter Waves is complemented by support from three cross-sectional departments of Quantum Engineering, Integration of Micro- and Nanosystems, and Theoretical Quantum Physics. The institute works in an interdisciplinary way, where fundamental theoretical research and experimental tests meets engineering.

Our department Integration of Micro- and Nanosystems (IMN) is involved in the development of technology for the production of quantum computers and quantum sensors. Build up the value chain for German quantum technology hardware at the Ulm Innovation Centre and play a central role in supporting relevant players from science and industry. Join us in laying the foundations for the next generation of quantum technology.

The position offers the possibility of a doctorate.

Your contribution includes the following tasks:

  • you will design and build a demonstrator for a miniaturized vacuum system
  • you develop vacuum-tight joints and characterize them
  • you manufacture and examine getter coatings to maintain the vacuum
  • In collaboration with internal and external partners, you will develop and construct a miniaturized pressure sensor for ultra-high vacuum applications.
  • you are responsible for process development and support of specific micro-production systems. You also contribute ideas for expansions, new developments and new acquisitions

You exchange scientific results with international colleagues, prepare publications for scientific journals and give presentations at national and international conferences, congresses, etc.

Your qualifications:

  • completed academic university studies (Master/Diploma University) in natural sciences (e.g. Physics, Materials research) or engineering sciences (e.g. in the fields of Applied physics, Microsystem technology, Nanotechnology, Mechanical engineering) or other study programs relevant to the job
  • knowledge in the field of vacuum technology
  • first experiences with microtechnology and cleanroom work
  • pleasure and experience in practical laboratory work
  • very good knowledge of the English language, both spoken and written
  • first experience in the field of construction and CAD
