PhD Student Position in the Skin Biology Laboratory (Prof. A. Navarini)

The Department of Biomedicine is a joint effort between the University of Basel and the University Hospitals Basel. It unites basic and clinical scientists to advance our understanding of health and disease and to develop pioneering therapies benefiting the lives of patients in areas of unmet need.

With more than 70 research groups and 900 employees, the Department of Biomedicine is the largest department at the University. We are located in the heart of Basel at 6 different locations. Be part of our future!

As part of the Department of Biomedicine, the Skin Biology Laboratory (Prof. A. Navarini) is looking for a PhD student to study the mechanisms of chronic skin diseases. We have recently developed human epidermal organoids, a 3D epidermis model, to recapitulate the biology and functions of human epidermis. This innovative model allows us to study in vitro the impact of defective genes or inflammatory conditions on the structure and physiology of the epidermis as it may occur in patients.

Your position

The candidate will be in charge of developing and studying this 3-dimensional human model in the context of skin pathologies of interest.

This implies:

  • Planning, designing and executing of experiments
  • Carrying out cell isolation from skin biopsies
  • Performing epidermal organoid and 2D epidermal cell cultures
  • Modifying epidermal organoids and 2D cultures with genes of interest
  • Testing drug candidates on epidermal organoids
  • Characterizing gene defects or response to soluble factors in organoids using western blot, immunochemistry and quantitative RT-PCR.

Your profile

Applicants should hold a Master's degree in Cell/Molecular Biology and have a strong commitment to research. Previous experience in 3D cell culture, molecular biology techniques and microscopy is required. Excellent communication skills and fluency in English (spoken and written) are required.

We offer you

  • A careful training period
  • The guidance of experienced scientists
  • A diverse range of tasks
