At DLR's Institute of Communications and Navigation (KN), reliable navigation systems are being developed for safety-critical applications that will enable the automatic landing or precision approach of aircraft and drones as well as the reliable operation of automated vehicles and trains in the future.
Satellite navigation technology (GPS and Galileo, or in general GNSS) is an essential component together with modern augmentation systems, such as Advanced Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (ARAIM).

High accurate satellite navigation algorithms such as Real Time Kinematic (RTK) or Precise Point Positioning (PPP) are required to reach the accuracy requirement of future operations of new autonomous applications like automated ground vehicles and drones. However, new integrity concepts for these algorithms still need to be developed for their use in safety or liable critical applications.

We offer a unique position to work on an interesting field in an international team of experts in GNSS integrity monitoring and multisensor navigation. You will investigate innovative theoretical and experimental solutions for high impactful applications and disseminate the results within expert groups, projects and at international conferences.

Based on your knowledge and experience, you will contribute to the continuous expansion of the institute's expertise. You are characterized by your enthusiasm for science, your creative drive and your skills in dealing with our employees and project partners from a wide range of nations. You will take advantage of opportunities for further training in the scientific and project management fields and can draw on our broad range of educational opportunities.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • analysis of the reliability of carrier-phase based GNSS positioning with ambiguity fixing (RTK and PPP)
  • investigation of integrity concepts, architectures and algorithms of carrier-phase GNSS positioning for new autonomous applications (e.g., urban air mobility)
  • design and implementation of robust carrier-phase error models and high accuracy algorithms able to quantify the integrity of the position solution over time
  • experimental validation of methods and algorithms with dedicated internal and project measurement campaigns with test vehicles/platforms
  • development and contribution to in-house demonstrators and simulators.
  • publication and presentation of results in projects and international expert groups and conferences
  • opportunity to supervise other colleagues and bachelor/master students

Your qualifications:

  • completed scientific university degree (Master / Diploma Uni) in engineering (e.g. geodesy, aerospace engineering, communications engineering) or other courses of study relevant to the job with a grade of good or better
  • relevant professional experience in the field of reliable satellite navigation, typically proven by a doctorate
  • in-depth knowledge in the field of satellite navigation (GPS, Galileo, EGNOS)
  • expert knowledge in the field of high-precision GNSS solutions (RTK, PPP), or integrity monitoring (ARAIM or SBAS)
  • in-depth knowledge in the field of statistical data processing
  • proven technical excellence in the field of reliable navigation, e.g. proven by prizes or awards
  • many years of experience in scientific project work and project management in an international environment
  • ability and practical experience in preparing scientific and technical reports and documentation for clients, as well as preparing conference papers and scientific publications in renowned journals
  • many years of experience in working on international committees (expert and standardization groups) in the field of reliable aeronautical navigation
  • extensive programming skills in a high-level programming language (Matlab, Python and/or C, C++,)
  • proficiency in written and spoken English (business fluent)

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
