The Institute of Technical Thermodynamics at DLR conducts research with over 200 employees in the field of efficient and resource-saving energy storage and converters.

The research group fundamentals of electrochemical systems investigates fuel cell systems for aviation applications through laboratory experiments and simulation. Through our interdisciplinary research and development work, we enhance the performance of fuel cell systems for future generations of aircraft. Current aircraft use conventional power converters for propulsion and electrical power supply. This will change in the future as part of the transition to electric flight. A major challenge is the development of lightweight and efficient fuel cell systems.

In this position, you are not only a key point of contact for compliance with safety regulations as an electrical specialist but also a crucial driver in the development of innovative fuel cell propulsion systems for aircraft. Your tasks include ensuring the safety of electrical systems, as well as designing, constructing, and commissioning electrical circuits. Additionally, you will be significantly involved in the continuous improvement of our safety practices. Your participation in documenting and presenting research results actively contributes to disseminating our work and shaping the future of aviation. In our department, you will be part of an agile and scientifically innovative team.

You will benefit from existing expertise and infrastructure, contributing to its continuous development within your role. If you bring the necessary level of personal responsibility and share our high standards for the scientific quality of your work, we offer you the ideal environment for personal and professional development at an internationally high level.

The place of work is Hamburg.

Your qualifications:

  • completed university degree (e.g., in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, Electronics, Energy Engineering, Control Engineering), or comparable relevant fields of study, or alternatively equivalent specialized knowledge and demonstrable relevant professional experience.
  • in-depth technical knowledge and industrial experience as an electrical specialist for the conceptualization, implementation, and operation of electrical systems at low voltage / medium voltage (AC/DC)
  • in-depth technical knowledge and industrial experience as an electrical engineer for work on direct current systems, particularly fuel cell systems and battery systems
  • in-depth knowledge of aircraft certification processes and application of aviation-related regulations and requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for integrating energy systems into aircraft
  • personal and social skills for cooperative collaboration in research projects
  • excellent analytical and systemic thinking skills
  • awareness of implementing operational safety of electrical systems
  • strong communication skills in both German and English

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x).Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
