As Austria's largest research and technology organisation for applied research, we are dedicated to make substantial contributions to solving the major challenges of our time, climate change and digitisation. To achieve our goals, we rely on our specific research, development and technology competencies, which are the basis of our commitment to excellence in all areas. With our open culture of innovation and our motivated, international teams, we are working to position AIT as Austria's leading research institution at the highest international level and to make a positive contribution to the economy and society.

Our Center for Technology Experience located in Vienna invites applications for a master’s thesis position. Our Center for Technology Experience, deals with fundamental questions on the interaction between people and technology and focuses on designing the best possible user experiences in a variety of fields, ranging from the optimal use of energy, automated and assistance systems in the context of Industry 4.0 to projects in the field of civil courage and game development for different target groups.

As part of an exciting research project within our interdisciplinary team “Experience Business Transformation”, we develop innovative Extended Reality (XR) prototypes to serve as supportive and guiding assistant systems for employees in industrial environments. Our primary goal is to enable employees to effortlessly detect quality problems or defects on components with the help of XR technologies. Another central aspect of our research project is the use of virtual reality as a simulation tool for the visualisation of new types of interaction and as a prototyping environment.

MASTER THESIS "VIRTUAL REALITY (VR) / AUGMENTED REALITY (AR) APPLICATIONS AS ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS IN THE INDUSTRY"

CENTER FOR TECHNOLOGY EXPERIENCE

  • The goal of the master thesis is to learn how to design, create and develop novel interaction concepts for virtual and augmented applications in the industry context.
  • The project envolves the development of executable prototypes in the XR technology domain, with a focus on Unity3D. These applications are developed for devices such as Magic Leap or Varjo X3. Therefore, under the guidance of our team, an essential point of your work will cover the integration of secondary data, which will support the users during the work processes.
  • You will conduct an independent and in-depth scientific research study.
  • You will learn how to carry out scientific planning and how to execute scientific studies.
  • Together with your team you will evaluate and analyse the data gathered throughout your research, and will create scientific reports, summarizing your research results.
  • Last but not least, you will document your ideas and conclusions and will create a presentation to effectively communicate your research findings.
  • In doing so, you will provide relevant support to the project management in the mentioned industry projects and, by taking over subtasks you will have the opportunity to work together with project partners from different domains and see how innovative AR, VR and XR technologies are applied in real-world scenarios.
  • You will expand your know-how in the field of Mixed Reality and application scenarios in industry.
  • You will be part of a multidisciplinary environment, in which you will have the opportunity to discuss your ideas and results with researchers and experts from the UX field and to grow your network, while interacting with different stakeholders.

Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:

  • Ongoing master’s studies in Informatics, Human-Computer Interaction or Computer Graphics (or a related field)
  • Comprehensive range of knowledge on virtual and augmented worlds and their technical challenges and/or new interaction approaches
  • Experience with 3D modeling and development (object-oriented programming skills and experience with Unity Game Framework)
  • Solid understanding of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate and work in a team, commitment, and an independent, responsible approach to work
  • Passion for research and enthusiasm for unconventional solutions, creativity, and visionary force
  • Very good knowledge of English; good knowledge of German would be an advantage

What you can expect:

  • Duration of the master’s thesis project: 6 months
  • Start date: October 2023 - however, there is some flexibility concerning the start date
  • EUR 890,-- gross per month for 20 hours/week based on the collective agreement, for a period of 6 months. There will be additional company benefits.
