To achieve our goals, we rely on our specific research, development and technology competencies, which are the basis of our commitment to excellence in all areas. With our open culture of innovation and our motivated, international teams, we are working to position AIT as Austria's leading research institution at the highest international level and to make a positive contribution to the economy and society.

Our Center for Digital Safety & Security is looking for new Ingenious Partner for our location in Vienna. The research field Computer Vision within the Competence Unit for Data Science & Artificial Intelligence is leading in applied research of developing and providing advanced security solutions for critical infrastructure and the public.

Join our AIT PhD Programme with around 150 international students, carried out in cooperation with renowned international universities – Let’s make ideas work – With you?

PHD THESIS “MOTION & RECOGNITION UNDER CHALLENGING OUTDOOR CONDITIONS”

CENTER FOR DIGITAL SAFETY & SECURITY

  • You will develop new neural models for object detection, object tracking and motion computation under occlusions caused by foliage or severe weather conditions, e.g., fog. Your work will include implementing a context drift mechanism to adapt the model to changing image quality.
  • You will establish potential training and benchmark data and define appropriate performance metrics for different sensor modalities, such as visual and thermal.
  • You'll targeting real-time computer vision solutions deployed on edge devices with limited processing power.
  • You are part of a team working at the cutting edge of technologies for AI systems by addressing practical problems from various stakeholders of European research projects
  • Under the guidance from our team, you will demonstrate the results of your work in prototype systems.
  • You will publish your research results at top computer vision conferences (CVPR/ECCV/ICCV/WACV) and international journals (TPAMI/IJCV).
  • You will gain experience from renowned international scientists and build your network to build up your scientific profile in cooperation with the European research community.
  • If you wish, your work could be scientific supervision of Prof. Daniel Cremer’s Computer Vision Group at the Technical University of Munich and the Munich Center for Machine Learning. This would involve quarterly presentations and group meetings in Munich, in addition to the guidance provided by AIT.

Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:

  • Master’s degree in computer science, mathematics or a related field with excellent academic success
  • In-depth knowledge and first research experience in computer vision or ML shown by relevant courses and/or a master's thesis
  • Good programming (Python) and writing skills (Latex, HTML) and willingness to learn Julia
  • Experience with PyTorch, OpenCV and willingness to learn JAX
  • Technical skills (Linux, Git, Docker), Continuous Integration (Gitlab CI/CD), willingness to work with HPC (Slurm, Enroot) & ROS
  • Ideally knowledge in Optical Sensors (e.g., RGB, thermal cameras), Edge platforms (e.g., Raspberry Pi, Nvidia Nano Jetson)
  • Publications in relevant conferences, workshops or journals are beneficial
  • Independent, self-organised work style, high commitment, and team spirit
  • Interest in real-world challenges from our stakeholders and clients
  • Fluency in verbal and written English is mandatory

What to expect:
